Another was to leap from branch to branch, dodging or deflecting ranged weaponry as they fired back with their bow and were provided spellcover by their fireholder. One tactic of ratatosks was to divebomb their enemies from trees.

Only when that failed would they resort to their melee weaponry, teeth, and claws. When they did, ratatosks would try to overwhelm their foes with sheer numbers. They were masters of ranged combat and generally avoided close-quarters fighting. Ratatosks typically fought in small bands of five to ten individuals, using raiding and skirmish tactics. In combat the inner strength of these creatures was fueled by panic, rather than blood lust. Like other creatures that were native to it, ratatosk would not fall into the Astral Plane if they ever lost contact with Yggdrasil. Only creatures with an intelligence above that of an animal would be affected. Those affected would become enraged and charge at the ratatosk, throwing aside any spell components, ranged weapons, or other items they were holding - with the exception of melee weapons and shields. These would effect any creature regardless of language, from up to 120 feet (37 meters) away, being conveyed clearly through harsh and mocking tones. They could uniquely speak taunts or insults that were partly magical in nature. Even magical missiles like Melf's acid arrow or Melf's minute meteors. Ratatosks were expert climbers, skilled at flying, and skilled at dodging all sorts of ranged attacks. And people providing them their own riddles could earn a ratatosk's respect or aid. They would sometimes taunt and tease travelers of Yggdrasil with such riddles until they received an answer. Ratatosks were adept at taunting and had a fondness for riddles of all kinds. And even when they did engage someone in combat, they weren't interested in outright killing them. They were willing to fight to the death in order to protect Yggdrasil. Though they rarely fought except when needing to defend their tribe, Yggdrasil, or their children. These creatures were rather careless with their lives and panicky fighters, more willing to fight in groups than alone. Ratatosks typically wore no clothing other than protective hats and harnesses to carry gear, tools, and magical nuts. The fur of their tails was uniformly darker than the rest of their body, usually matching the bark of nearby trees. The members of a pack almost entirely exhibited the same fur color. The fur on their bodies - which ranged from shades of black to gray and brown to red - was thick enough to keep them comfortable in all but the coldest of winter freezes. They also had large, flattened tails that they used to direct their gliding. It's resource rich, so I can put the mine and quarry on hold, but the mountains west of town will probably become a mining outpost.These creatures resembled flying squirrels, having a furry membrane on each side of their body that connected their arms and legs. I think it's the best starter area I've found yet! For initial lay out and farm expansion in the first several years as population grows, I give it a 9/10. I mirrored it on the other side to make sure the shed for the farms will be within market range. For the first time I've been able to integrate the starter town into the overall design. There's even enough land just west of town against the mountain to get a starter pen for whichever animal you get - I got sheep. South of that is some good flat area for farming. You start out along the main river with a wooded area to the top good for a forester set (forester/hunter/gatherer) a short walk from town, and an open area good for a market and town buildings below.

(Valleys, Medium) I play the game on easy thus far, and it gave me the best starting area of any map I've had yet - and I've attempted about 15 cities thus far.
